What are the programs offered in Engineering Design at IIT Madras?

The Department of Engineering Design is one of the most vibrant and dynamic departments here at IIT Madras. Through its highly industry-oriented curriculum, it not only arms its students with knowledge and skill, but also provokes them to ideate, innovate and apply.

This first of its kind department at IIT Madras offers the following courses:

BTech+MTech Dual Degree Programme:

  • Eligibility : Applicants must have met eligibility for qualifying JEE-Advanced [insert link to jee adv]
  • Course: The 5 year course spans a range of insightful and thought stimulating avenues in design, engineering and innovation. In the first year, students are exposed to fundamentals in mathematics, science, engineering, graphics, design and aesthetics. The courses also cover electronic aspects of design such as embedded systems, controls and mechanics for rounded insight. The first three years of the course offer perhaps the most interesting courses on campus in geometric modeling, finite element analysis, human anatomy and physiology. What sets the department apart from the rest is the strong emphasis on practical knowledge, with laboratory backing to most of the courses. From product disassembly labs, to graphic and clay modeling, it appeals to anyone and everyone. At the end of the fourth semester, students choose their specialization and pursue it till the end of the course. The specializations offered can be under:
    • Automotive Design
    • Biomedical Design
    • Robotics (IDDD)
    • Electric Vehicles (IDDD)

Finally, in line with the vision to provide strong practical and industry exposure, the curriculum necessitates a semester-long (6 month) internship where students work on a ‘live-project’ that meets industry relevant standards.

MS/ PhD programme:

  • Eligibility: Students with Undergraduate or Graduate Degrees in mechanical, electrical, electronics, biomedical, or allied branches can apply throughout the year. Selection is based on a written test and subsequent interview.

  • Course: The Department of Engineering Design has a strong pool of highly qualified faculty, backed by world class laboratories. The central domains of research here are:

    • Automotive Systems and Design: Being a strong automotive engineering hub, Chennai offers great relevance to research in this field. The key focuses of this course are research and development in vehicle dynamics, tyre design, fault diagnosis, ergonomics, and intelligent transportation systems.
    • Materials, Design and Manufacturing: The cornerstone of every successful product is without doubt, its composition. The department constantly puts out insightful research on newer materials and their feasibility of use in products. The main avenues of research here are: Geometric and solid modeling, Reliability, Fatigue and Fracture, Sustainable Manufacturing, Design Thinking, Lean manufacturing, and Structural Health Monitoring.
    • Robotics and Mechatronics: With the future of the world inevitably relying on robotics and automation, the department addresses the need for development of principles of mechanics and electronics to develop next generation products. The key focus of research lies in the design and analysis of Parallel Manipulators, Underwater Robots, Path Planning, System Dynamics, Control opto-mechatronics and sensing.
    • BioMedical Design: Last but definitely not the least, biomedical design is an important field garnering lots of attention off late in the ever-changing conditions of the world. The department trains engineers to be able to apply fundamental principles of engineering to innovate and develop essential medical devices and practices for India and the world. The main areas of research are: medical imaging, biomedical scaffold design, biomedical devices and control, Microwave ablation, Rehabilitation engineering and Nanomedicine.
