What is the procedure for MTech Admissions at IITM? What is the eligibility criteria? What is the entrance examination and what are the cut-offs?

The M.Tech degree at IIT Madras is a highly coveted one. The institute offers 2-year MTech programs in numerous disciplines: Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Ocean Engineering, and Physics departments. There are even interdisciplinary programs available across multiple departments!

Eligibility Criteria:

For the 2023 admission, candidates qualified in GATE 2021, GATE 2022, or GATE 2023 and satisfying any one of the following criteria are eligible to apply :

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture from educational institutions approved by the AICTE/Government
  • A Master’s degree in Chemistry/ Life Sciences/ Mathematics/ Physics related subjects from educational institutions approved by the UGC/Government
  • Degrees obtained through Distance Education/ Correspondence Mode for the qualifying degree specified in the brochure. The Departments will follow suitability test/ interview procedure for screening in such cases
  • Candidates yet to appear or have appeared in the final examination for the qualifying degree specified in the brochure and whose results are likely to be declared by the deadline set
  • Associate membership holders from professional bodies
  • Foreign Nationals who have obtained a qualifying degree in India/abroad
  • Candidates with B.Tech. Degrees from IITs with a CGPA of 8.0 and above can apply WITHOUT a GATE score

Candidates also have to keep a few documents handy for their application. You may have to upload the following valid documents/files (as applicable) pertaining to you while applying:

  • Image file of the recent passport size photograph.
  • Image file of the Signature.
  • GATE Score card
  • Nationality certificate
  • ALL Grade Card(s) till date or consolidated marksheet.
  • Persons with Disability certificate

  • EWS Certificate
  • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) Certificate
  • Course syllabus

Admission will be finalised as per the GATE Score and on the basis of choices given by them in the application. The first set of offers will likely be sent in May and made available on the Common Offer Admission Portal (COAP).
