I am working as employee in Government organization, would like to know the procedure for getting admission in IIT Chennai for PhD, it is to mention that i have completed M. tech in IIT Bombay in the year 2012.
1. Preliminary Planning
- Decide Category: Full-time vs. Part-Time vs. External.
- Clarify Recognition: Verify that your Government organisation is DSIR/DST-recognised (External) or within commuting distance (Part-Time).
2. Obtain Employer Documents (for Part-Time/External)
- No-Objection Certificate (NOC) stating permission to pursue Ph.D. and that duties allow course attendance.
- Sponsorship/Relief Certificate (External only) committing to salary during study leave or flexi-time.
- Co-Guide Nomination on employer letterhead (External only).
3. Online Registration (https://research.iitm.ac.in)
- Create account with official email.
- Fill personal, academic, and work-experience details.
- Upload:
- Passport-size photo & signature.
- M.Tech. transcripts & degree.
- Category certificates (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwD) where applicable.
- Employer NOC/Sponsorship letters (Part-Time/External).
- Pay non-refundable fee online:
- ₹1,000 (GN/EWS/OBC-NCL Male & Transgender), ₹500 (Female, SC/ST, PwD).
4. Shortlisting & Call Letter
- Departments publish shortlist on their websites and email applicants at least 2 weeks before the test/interview date. Prepare:
- Printed application.
- Original certificates & NOC.
5. Departmental Test / Interview
- Format varies by department; usually:
- Written test on core engineering fundamentals (may be waived for M.Tech. with high CGPA).
- Technical interview assessing research aptitude & alignment with proposed area.
- Bring one-page Research Proposal Synopsis; focus on problem statement, objectives, and methodology.
6. Offer & Admission
- Successful candidates receive an e-offer via portal/email.
- Full-time must submit relieving order by joining day.
- Part-Time/External submit final sponsorship and proceed to pay semester fees.
