Phd admission without gate

Want to know the procedure of admission into phd programme, for the July session.

I didn’t qualify gate, am I still eligible for applying and if I am, would I get stipend.

I’m currently pursuing mtech in water resource engg., NIT ROURKELA.

Hello Soubhagy,

You can still apply for the PhD programme at IIT Madras even if you did not qualify GATE this time, especially since you are already pursuing an M.Tech. If your previous GATE score, let’s say for your M.Tech, is still within the validity period (generally valid for three years from the date of the result announcement), you may mention it during the application.

However, eligibility for stipend/fellowship may depend on whether you have a valid past GATE score (as required by the department) or if the department has project-funded positions available.

Since you are from Water Resources Engineering, the suitability of your profile would also depend on how well your research interests align with the faculty and ongoing work in the Civil Engineering department or other related departments of your major (including but not limited to Ocean Engineering Department). Interdisciplinary backgrounds are considered, but selection is usually based on research fit, SOP, interview performance, and faculty availability.

Non-HTRA PhD eligibility criteria includes:

  1. Institute/Project Staff: Candidates currently employed on a project at IIT Madras with at least 6 months of relevant experience can apply without a GATE score.
  2. External/Part-Time Candidates: Working professionals sponsored by their employers (R&D organisations, recognised industries, or academic institutions) with at least 2 years of relevant work experience are exempt from the GATE requirement.
  3. Alternate National Exams: If you hold a Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or Sciences, you can apply by submitting valid scores from tests like UGC-JRF, CSIR-JRF, NET, or NBHM.

It would be best to check the current PhD admission notification and fellowship criteria on the IIT Madras research admissions portal once the July session applications are announced.
