Doubt regarding category in JEE 2025

The following is my junior’s query. He is giving his JEE 2025 this year. Please do help us out resolve his issues.

  • Caste wise My caste Belongs to OBC Category according to Central List, But as both of my parents work as government servants and my parents’ income exceeds 8 lakhs (Note: Mentioning Family income was a requirement during Registration Process), I won’t be eligible for getting OBC NCL certificate so will belong to General category. I have Given My category as OBC (NCL) during Jee Main Registration Process thinking, The section asked for my caste’s category (moreover OBC CL option was not there), was it a Mistake? should I change It to General before Jee Mains session 2 Result? or Overall Rank list Release?
  • Or what repercussions will this confusion cause during Counselling process?
  • Will My Jee Main 2025 Result Contain only my CRL Rank considering me as General Candidate as I have also mentioned my parents’ income during registration process or will I be considered as An OBC candidate and given a Community Rank?
  • Will I Be able change it during Registration for Jee Advanced if this was a Mistake?

Yes, unfortunately, your junior made a mistake by selecting OBC-NCL when he is not eligible due to his parents’ income and job status. Since JEE Main doesn’t have an option for OBC-CL, and only recognizes OBC-NCL for reservation, candidates like him are automatically treated as General if they can’t provide a valid OBC-NCL certificate.

He could have used the correction window to change his category to General. However, it’s no longer open. So, his JEE Main result will still show only the Common Rank List (CRL) rank, not an OBC rank, because he mentioned an income above ₹8 lakh and won’t be able to submit a valid OBC-NCL certificate during counseling. There might also be some delay in verification or seat allotment. For JEE Advanced, he can change his category to General during registration, and it’s advisable to do so to avoid disqualification or confusion.
