Looking for a BTech Program that combines best of both the worlds of Mechanical and Electronics Engineering

Hi,

I am looking for a BTech Program that combines best of both the worlds of Mechanical Engineering and Electronics Engineering Disciplines..

After my BTech, I primarily am looking to pursue Masters in Mechatronics Engineering from a reputed German University. However, I would like gain the skills of IC Design, VLSI and Electronics Engineering related subjects too, so that, as an alternative option, I could pursue an Electronics Engineer career and join large companies like Qualcomm, Broadcom, etc. right after my BTech.

So, If I chose to join BTech Mechanical Engineering with IITM, what are those Electives that I should take in order to gain Core Electronics skills like IC Design, VLSI and related that gives me an option to project myself as a Electronics Engineer too (in addition to Mechanical Engineer)?

Alternatively, I am looking for any other BTech / Dual Degree Program that covers best of both these worlds (Mechanical and Electronics) so that, I can either do my Mechatronics / Robotics Masters in Germany OR I can join as an Electronics Engineer with Large Companies like Qualcomm / Broadcom, etc.

I sincerely request you to kindly suggest me the right Path as per my career interests.

Thank you,
Abhihas

If you’re looking to blend the physical world of machines with the intelligence of electronics—whether to build robots, pursue Mechatronics in Germany, or land a core electronics job at companies like Qualcomm or Broadcom—IIT Madras offers more than one path to get you there.

From classic Mechanical Engineering to cutting-edge interdisciplinary programs, here’s how you can craft your ideal engineering journey.

Option 1: BTech in Mechanical Engineering with Electronics Electives

The traditional BTech in Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras is far from rigid. With a wide pool of electives, you can customize your degree to include courses from the Electrical Engineering department—allowing you to build a solid electronics foundation alongside your mechanical core.

Top electives to consider:

  • VLSI Design
  • Digital and Analog IC Design
  • Embedded Systems
  • Microcontrollers and Microprocessors
  • Signals and Systems

You can also pursue final-year projects under EE faculty, especially in IC or VLSI design—great for showcasing interdisciplinary skills during job placements or master’s applications.

This route gives you the flexibility to switch tracks later, without committing to a new branch from the start.

Option 2: BTech in Computational Engineering and Mechanics (CEM)

(Launched in 2025)

This new program is designed exactly for students who want to combine mechanics, electronics, and computational intelligence in one unified curriculum.

What you’ll study:

  • Solid and fluid mechanics
  • Core electrical engineering and embedded systems
  • Robotics and automation
  • AI, machine learning, and computational modeling

With this program, you’re prepared for careers in robotics, aerospace, smart manufacturing, and beyond, backed by a strong interdisciplinary foundation. You can read more about this course here.

Dual Degree (IDDD) Options for Deeper Specialization

Once you join any BTech program at IIT Madras, you can apply for a 5-year Interdisciplinary Dual Degree (IDDD). These programs let you specialize in areas like:

  • Robotics
  • Computational Engineering
  • Complex Systems

You’ll earn both a BTech and an MTech, gain access to more electives and research opportunities, and build a strong profile for core engineering roles or higher studies abroad.

At IIT Madras, you’re not locked into a single path. Whether through Mechanical Engineering with smart electives, the new CEM program, or flexible dual degrees, you can shape your learning around both mechanical and electronics domains. At your own pace, via your own path.
