What are L, T, E, P, O, C credits?
IIT Madras uses a structured credit system to quantify the academic workload for M.Tech courses. Each course is represented by a code in the format L-T-E-P-O-C. Here’s what each letter stands for:
- L: Number of Lecture hours per week
- T: Number of Tutorial hours per week
- E: Number of Extended tutorial hours per week
- P: Number of Practical (lab) hours per week
- O: Number of hours expected to be spent outside the class (self-study, assignments, projects, etc.)
- C: Total number of credits for the course
The sum of L, T, E, P, and O gives the total number of credits (C) for the course.
Additional Details
- Lecture (L), Tutorial (T), Extended Tutorial (E), and Practical (P) components reflect the contact hours per week.
- O (Outside class hours) captures the expected self-study or project work time.
- C (Credits) is the total, reflecting the overall academic load per week for the course.
M.Tech Credit Requirements
- The minimum credit requirements for M.Tech programs are specific to each department and specialization.
- Credits are accumulated through core courses, electives, and project work, with typical total requirements ranging around 190 credits for the entire program, depending on the department.
