What is the Open Air Theatre used for?

The Open Air Theatre of IITM, more commonly referred to as OAT, is one of the most architecturally pleasing structures of IIT Madras. It has a total of 3 gates, with the design being similar to a Roman amphitheater. The seating capacity is around 6000.OAT is the place where students, professors, and staff along with their families gather to watch a movie, ranging from English to regional languages, every Saturday night. The movie is projected onto a massive wall with a 2K digital projector and a top-quality sound system.

The OAT is also the venue of many shows during Saarang and Shaastra, and has seen many electric performances from artists including KK, Shaan, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan, and even international artists like Marnik, AronChupa and Maddix!

Apart from these, all of Insti’s celebrations, from Holi to Garba DJ nights, happen in OAT. It is truly a remarkable sight to witness over 1000 students coming together to dance, celebrate, and drench themselves in festive vibes.
