Ever found yourself torn between your passion for sports and dreams of an IIT degree? The age-old dilemma that forced countless talented athletes to choose between their sporting ambitions and academic excellence has finally been addressed!
Breaking New Ground in 2024
In a historic first, IIT Madras has introduced the Sports Excellence Admission (SEA) program, becoming the pioneering IIT to implement a dedicated sports quota for undergraduate admissions. This groundbreaking initiative creates a pathway for exceptional student-athletes who no longer need to sacrifice their sporting careers for top-tier technical education.
“The sports excellence admission is an initiative of IIT Madras primarily to send the important message that young children must be encouraged to play during their childhood,” - Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras
How Can You Qualify?
The SEA program maintains IIT’s commitment to excellence while opening doors for athletes. To qualify:
- Academic Merit: You must qualify in JEE (Advanced) and secure a position in the Common Rank List or your category-wise list
- Sporting Excellence: You need at least one medal at a national or international sports competition in the past four years
- Application Process: Admissions happen through a special SEA portal managed by IIT Madras
- Selection Criteria: Seat allotment is based on a Sports Rank List (SRL) reflecting your sporting achievements
Inclusivity at Its Core
The program thoughtfully addresses representation through its structure:
- Dedicated Seats: Two additional seats per undergraduate program
- Gender Equity: One gender-neutral seat and one exclusively for female students
Meet the Trailblazers
The inaugural 2024-25 batch welcomed five outstanding athletes from across India:
Name | State | Sport | Program |
---|---|---|---|
Arohi Bhave | Maharashtra | Volleyball | BS (Medical Sciences and Engineering) |
Aryaman Mandal | West Bengal | Water Polo & Swimming | B.Tech (Computer Science and Engineering) |
Nandini Jain | Delhi | Squash | B.Tech (Computer Science and Engineering) |
Prabhav Gupta | Delhi | Table Tennis | B.Tech (Artificial Intelligence and Data Science) |
Vangala Vedavachan Reddy | Andhra Pradesh | Lawn Tennis | B.Tech (Artificial Intelligence and Data Science) |
From the Pioneers Themselves
Students from the first batch shared that the application process felt similar to JoSAA, with the key difference being the requirement to upload certificates documenting national and international sports achievements from the past four years. They emphasize that the selection process is competitive, focusing on significant accomplishments rather than mere participation.
These trailblazers are now preparing to represent IIT Madras at the prestigious Inter IIT Sports Meet and competitions like the Khelo India University Games, bringing pride to the institution both on and off the field.
The Road Ahead
While creating new opportunities for student-athletes, IIT Madras remains committed to its academic standards. Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean (Emeritus), highlighted that despite receiving numerous applications, only five students of “excellent standing and yet academically qualified” were admitted.
