What does the IDDD in Public Policy aim at?

Policy making processes in the future, as in the past, will require a sound understanding of technologies that become a part of policy regimes in various sectors. Students of engineering trained in policy sciences will be able to contribute more effectively in the designing, implementation, monitoring and assessment of policies at a societal level. The benefits and consequences of new technologies can be realized only if we fully understand their impact on markets, society, citizen rights and regulatory practices.

What is the scope of the IDDD public Policy program?

The programme in Public Policy intends to impart comprehensive perspectives and skills to the Undergraduate Engineering students of IIT Madras and equip them to make significant contributions to the policy making processes in India.

This programme will produce a new breed of professionals trained in Engineering and Policy Sciences. Students will have opportunities to learn through field projects and engagement with policy making machinery such as Planning Commissions of various state governments, Think Tanks, reputed Non-Governmental Organizations, and with elected representatives (such as MPs and MLAs) as well.

Who is eligible to apply?

Any student who wishes to apply for the program must have exemplary academic records with a CGPA of more than 8 by the 5th semester. The seat availability in the program at present is 20. The students who get selected have to complete a minimum credit requirement of 157 credits. The programme would commence from the 7th semester.

How is the program structured?

The programme consists of 5 core courses, 3 electives, and Project work to be completed in three stages. Electives can be chosen from a basket of 15 courses.There is scope for students to engage in joint teaching of core and elective courses with faculty from different departments. Project work guidance shall be provided jointly by faculty from the HSS department and others.
